Award for Haddon Heights Design Guidelines

We were delighted to learn that the Haddon Heights Design Guidelines has won the 2021 Award for Historic District Commissions from Preservation New Jersey, the statewide preservation organization. The award to our client the Historic Preservation Commission of Haddon Heights honored their efforts to create Design Guidelines specific to their community, which Heritage Consulting Inc. wrote and designed for them earlier this year. The award was made during a presentation on October 13, 2021 at the Preservation New Jersey owned Sanctuary in Ewing NJ.

Haddon Heights, NJ, in Camden County has had an historic preservation ordinance since 1975. So, for almost 50 years, this Borough has believed that preserving our history and community character is essential. The Haddon Heights Historic Preservation Commission (HPC), with its dedicated members over these many years, has worked hard to designate the eight individual landmarks and the six historic districts along parts of First Avenue, Fourth Avenue, East and West Atlantic Avenues, the White Horse Pike, and along Station Avenue in its downtown. However, the HPC never had Design Guidelines written specifically for the structures in its Historic Districts.

As a long-standing Certified Local Government (CLG), the Historic Preservation Commission wanted to have, as required, design guidelines written for its community. They were able to secure a grant funding from the NJ Historic Preservation Office to create Design Guidelines and Heritage Consulting Inc. submitted the winning proposal in January 2021 to write and design them. Over four months in 2021, we worked with closely with the Haddon Heights HPC to create the Design Guidelines for the Historic Districts in Haddon Heights.

The Design Guidelines present preservation treatments and activities that the HPC does and does not recommend throughout its handsome full color 160 pages, using more than 225 contemporary and historic photos, maps, text, and drawings to educate and explain these treatments and activities.

We are just delighted to be recognized with this award and have created this handsome document to help the Haddon Heights HPC  further their preservation activities in the Borough.
