Tacony CDC Strategic Plan 2024-2029 Adopted!

Tacony Community Development Corporation Philadelphia PA

One of our long-standing clients is the Tacony Community Development Corporation (TCDC) located in Northeast Philadelphia. Since its inception in 2011, the TCDC has diligently worked to enhance the commercial corridor using the Main Street Four Point Approach™. Over the past twelve years, despite challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, the TCDC has actively promoted the corridor’s diverse retail locations, restaurants, and service-oriented businesses. The TCDC has hosted retail events, facilitated the expansion of existing businesses, recruited new ones, and marketed the corridor and the organization to both Tacony residents and potential visitors from the greater Philadelphia region. The Torresdale Avenue commercial district is part of a large National Register historic district and serves as the heart of present-day Tacony. This is the third Strategic Plan that Heritage Consulting Inc. has completed for the organization.

This new Strategic Plan has a tighter focus. The organization will continue to proactively address deteriorated housing and commercial buildings through the PA Act 135 Conservatorship program, building on its successes in the last few years. The TCDC also wants to intervene in the local real estate market by identifying investment opportunities in storefronts and interiors for the organization to lease or purchase. They also wish to provide creative opportunities, like grants and subsidies, to attract desired businesses to the corridor.

Additionally, historic preservation continues to be a key goal. The Trustees want to complete twenty additional storefront improvements, bringing the total to over fifty newly renovated and repaired historic buildings. Designation of local historic districts is a major goal, and they wish to continue nominating individual buildings to the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places to assure protection against demolition and insensitive alterations. With the Tacony Historical Society, the TCDC will continue its research to determine if a Conservation Overlay District makes sense for the 1100 building Tacony-Disston Community Development National Register Historic District. The Trustees adopted the Strategic Plan on September 18, and we congratulate them on setting this ambitious agenda for the next five years.
